The nice lady at the bus stop
So I'm waiting at the bus stop after working in a call center talking to people for the last eight hours. All I really wanted to do was to go home and have a break from people. Alas, such was not in the cards for me just yet. As I sat there, an elderly woman sat down next to me and started talking to me about how her house is too big for her now that her husband has passed on. It has a full basement and it's hard for her to keep up with the cleaning and yard work. Her daughter tries to help, but the daughter's husband drinks too much and wants the daughter to stay home with him. I politely nod and act somewhat interested (my first mistake!) until she comes up for breath. Then I pull out my book and start to read, hoping she'll take the hint. But no. Then she starts to tell me about two women that go to her church and live together. She thinks that the 2 women are "a little more than roommates. Not that it's any of my business". Again she pauses. Thinking that the book wasn't obvious enough, this time I get up to check the bus schedule, thinking that doing that is a polite way to get away from her. Little did I expect her to follow me and keep talking to me!! Finally my bus came, and I kept watching her, thinking that if she was getting on my bus, I was going to wait for the next one!! But I was finally able to get away from and head home! I don't know that I've ever been as happy to get on a bus as I was that day!
