I saw a story about a South Korean couple who apparently have an internet addiction. They had both lost their jobs and had a baby (8 months old if I remember right.) Seems like they were having trouble coping with reality, so instead they would go to the nearby internet cafe and play some sort of computer game where they created a child in cyberspace and cared for it, fed it, etc. The problem was that while they were "nurturing" their cyber baby, their real baby was at home, starving to death. According to the story I read, the couple would come home once a day to feed their baby, then back to the internet cafe they'd go, without their real baby. The real baby starved to death. How many days did they leave the child alone before it died? While they were playing the game, did either one of them wonder how their real child was doing? I know drugs and alcohol can alter perceptions of reality. Can an internet addiction do the same thing?
Down in Alabama, a high school girl wants to take her girlfriend (they are both lesbians) to the prom. The school doesn't want to allow that to happen. So they canceled the prom for everyone. The school has taken a strong stand against homosexuality. If other kids retaliate against the lesbians with violence, threats, etc, will the school's stand against violence/threats/bullying be as stong and visible and swift?
During the last few days of the Olympics, they did a story about an island off Canada. I think the name of the island is Gander. Gander is a small island, with about 5000 people if I remember right. On 9/11 when US airspace was shut down, several planes heading for the US were diverted to Gander. In all over 7000 passengers/crew/pilots descended on this small island for several days. This small island took the people in, gave them shelter, food, friendship. In Gander, helping your neighbor is a way of life, the best way to survive. So to help these stranded people was something they did just because that's what needed to be done. Several lifelong friendships were formed. An English chap met a Texas belle and within a year, they were married. They went back to the island for their honeymoon. I think if was one to the pilots of a diverted ship wanted to give something back to this small island. So she started a college fund for the high school students of Gander. Slowly, over the years, many of the people who were stranded have donated to this small college fund. That fund is now over $900,000. So many lives were lost, changed forever that day. For me it's nice to hear about some of the positive changes that came about from so much tragedy.
