So this past week, the Supreme Court ruled by an 8-1 margin that dog fighting videos cannot be banned because they are covered by the Constitution and freedom of speech. Now, I freely admit that I am biased on this particular issue since I am an animal lover. But it seems like if something is against the law (in most areas dog fights are against the law) then videos of a crime shouldn't be covered by freedom of speech. In at least some dog fights the dogs do die. So, taking that point of view to an extreme, are human snuff films also covered by freedom of speech? Aren't dog fighting videos in some respect close to dog snuff films? And, as long as there is money to be made by filming the fights, isn't this in fact encouraging the fight promoters to stage more dog fights, so they can make more money? Shouldn't we as compassionate people be trying to do everything in our power to discourage this cruel and abusive practice? Is it wise to ignore the link between animal abuse/cruelty and how that translates to violence against humans? Kudos to the one compassionate, humane judge that ruled against allowing dog fighting videos to be covered by our constitution. I only wish that this lone voice was the majority, not the vast minority.
I just saw an article about a homeless man in New York City. He saw a man threatening to stab a woman, so the homeless man stepped in to help the woman. In the process the homeless man got stabbed, and fell to the sidewalk. After he went down, the woman and the man with the knife took off. The homeless man laid on the sidewalk in New York City, bleeding for over an hour before someone called for help. There is apparently a video (which I haven't seen yet) that shows at least one person coming out of a nearby building, taking a picture of the man with a cell phone. Another person actually reached down and shook the man on the sidewalk, then walked away.
So this homeless man stepped in to help someone being threatened and yet no one could be bothered to take the time to call for help as he laid on the sidewalk. Dying. Because he did die, laying there as people walked by, judging him.
What a sad state of affairs we have going. Dog fighting videos are protected, yet we can't be bothered to help another human in need. I need to go hug my Pipster now. I'm not liking people much right now.

Teri here....with a thought about your first paragraph....
ReplyDeleteWhat about human wrestling? That's violent, and promotes human abuse on humans.
For me, the difference between wrestling and/or boxing is that the humans have a choice. They are not tortured, kept in inhumane conditions, and FORCED to fight, even if injured. Humans have the choice. The dogs don't. Also, humans make money by choosing to fight. What benefit do the dogs get?
