I read an article where there is a bill before Congress that would make it mandatory for all states to require anyone convicted of a DUI to have a breathalyzer installed in their car to prevent them from driving while intoxicated. There's also a push to have some sort of non-invasive Breathalyzer installed on new cars at the factory. The article mentioned something that could read your alcohol level by skin contact, instead of having to breath into it. I have no problem with those already convicted having some sort of detection device to at least try to prevent them from drinking and driving. I haven't quite decided how I feel about having them installed on new cars. Personally, since I rarely, if ever drink, it would not have much, if any impact on my life. But there is a side of me that is uneasy about it. I'm not sure if it's the fact of the spectre of big brother, or the fact that somewhere we have lost the sense of personal responsibility. So, if these are installed on the new cars, and it malfunctions, or someone finds a way around the system (because we all know there will be people trying to find a way around it), and someone is still able to drink and drive and gets caught, will the malfunction give them a ready made defense for drinking and driving?
I hope that everyone has a very safe and happy Valentine's day.
