I just read a story about a fairly new program in Ohio. Some mothers are being allowed to raise their babies in jail while serving their sentence. The program can only accommodate 20 mothers.
To qualify in Ohio, mothers have to be scheduled for release before their child turns 18 months old to be eligible for the program. Experts think that children that age will have no memory of where they spent their early life. Apparently the mother and child share a jail cell. The purpose is to allow bonding time between mother and child. And it seems that the mothers are less likely to end up back in jail, once released. I think it would be interesting to check with the kids in the next 10-20 years to see if or how being raised behind bars has effected them.
Pip is still a love bug, and hasn't been hit by a car since she tried to give me a heart attack by going into the street while I was watching. Lately she's being staying in until I leave for work, then she leaves with me to go do her kitty duties. I'm glad that she likes to be home with me for as long as I'm there. Makes me feel loved, she does!
